I LOVE this book! My mom read it and recommended it to me. My language arts teacher this year also enjoyed reading this book and lent her copy to a few of her other students. It’s not a kids’ book, but it is a good read for higher level middle school readers.
Flavia de Luce is an eleven-year-old girl who aspires to become a chemist. Her specialty? Poison. One summer’s day, Flavia finds a dead snipe with a rare postage stamp stuck on its beak on the doorstep of Buckshaw, her family’s estate. Soon after, Flavia sees a mysterious man die on the de Luces’ property, but Flavia doesn’t think anyone living at Buckshaw is a murderer. Flavia believes that there is a connection between the strange events. Along with her trusty bicycle names Gladys, Flavia de Luce sets out to find the man’s killer and discover the dead man’s identity.
The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie is the first installment in a collection of Flava de Luce Mysteries by the exquisite author Alan Bradley. While reading this book, I learned quite a few funny British sayings! This book is both quirky and interesting and is filled with adventure and mystery. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did!
